Week 3

In doing some background research for parts one and two of our class, I found an interesting article that discussed the connection between cave paintings and religious art.  However, this theory was proven inadequate, resulting in the common understanding that it was very difficult, if not impossible, to make sense of what our ancestors had been doing.  As a result it was felt that the art work, had been nothing more than random paintings in caves.

However those who argue for this theory identified that what was depicted were images of the mind or visions, arguing that our ancestors must have experienced altered states of consciousness.  Therefore it is believed that these visions would be the foundation for the creation of our religion, beginning with the belief in an “Otherworld” beyond our normal, physical senses.
